The 75% rule — what it actually means
Almost every college affiliated with SPPU, Mumbai University, RTM Nagpur, or any UGC-regulated institution in India follows the minimum 75% attendance rule. This isn't just a college policy — it's mandated by UGC (University Grants Commission) guidelines.
In simple terms: out of every 100 lectures held for a subject, you must be present for at least 75. Miss more than 25 and you're at risk.
What actually happens when you go below 75%
The consequences depend on how far below 75% you are and your college's specific policy, but here's the general pattern across Maharashtra colleges:
- Below 75% but above 65%: Most colleges allow you to appear for exams with a fine or a written undertaking. Some require a medical certificate or valid reason.
- Below 65%: You are typically not allowed to sit for the university exam (called "detained"). This means you lose the entire semester and have to repeat it.
- Below 50%: Automatic detention in most colleges, no exceptions.
Can you get a medical exemption?
Yes — but it's not as easy as it sounds. Most colleges allow attendance condonation (temporary exemption) for:
- Medical emergencies with a hospital certificate
- Participation in university-level sports, cultural events, or NCC/NSS activities
- Family emergencies (death of immediate family member)
Condonation typically covers up to 10% of attendance — meaning if the minimum is 75%, students with condonation can appear with as low as 65%. But this is at the college's discretion.
How to recover if you're at risk
If you're currently below or close to 75%, here's a practical recovery plan:
- Calculate your exact situation first — use AttendanceIQ to see how many consecutive classes you need to attend to get back above 75% in each subject.
- Prioritise the worst subjects — focus your attendance on subjects where you're furthest below. Missing a subject you're already at 85% in has less impact than attending one you're at 68% in.
- Talk to your professor early — don't wait until exams. Professors have more flexibility early in the semester than right before exams.
- Check your college's condonation policy — ask your HOD or academic office specifically what the condonation process is at your college.
The bottom line
The 75% rule sounds harsh but it's manageable if you track it subject-by-subject throughout the semester — not just right before exams. The biggest mistake students make is assuming their overall attendance is fine without checking each subject individually.
